Physics Question for revision
Give The reason For following Question :
1. Why is the series arrangement not used for domestic circuits?
2. How does the resistance of a wire vary with its area of cross-section?
3. Why are copper and aluminium wires usually employed for electricity transmission?
4. Explain why, filament type electric bulbs are not power efficient.
5. State whether an electric heater will consume more electrical energy or less electrical energy per second
when the length of its heating element is reduced. Give reasons for your answer.
Numericals :
1. A wire that has resistance R is cut into two equal pieces. The two parts are joined in parallel. What is the
resistance of the combination ?
2. An electric motor takes 5 amperes current from a 220 volt supply line. Calculate the power of the motor and electrical energy consumed by it in 2 hours.
3. Two lamps, one rated 40 W at 220 V and the other 60 W at 220 V, are connected in parallel to the electric
supply at 220 V.
(a) Draw a circuit diagram to show the connections.
(b) Calculate the current drawn from the electric supply.
(c) Calculate the total energy consumed by the two lamps together when they operate for one hour.
4. What is (a) highest, and (b) lowest, resistance which can be obtained by combining four resistors having the
following resistances ?
4 Ω , 8 Ω , 12 Ω, 24 Ω
5. How will you connect three resistors of resistances 2 Ω, 3 Ω and 6 Ω to obtain a total resistance of : (a) 4 Ω and (b) 1 Ω ?
Define the following terms :
1. The SI unit of resistivity.
2. Distinguish between resistance and resistivity
3. one coulomb charge
4. SI unit of potential difference
