The Noun : Kinds

There are five kinds of nouns :

• Proper Noun
• Common Noun
• Collective Noun
• Material Noun
• Abstract Noun

Proper Noun :

The name given to a particular person, place or thing.
for example:
☆ John is very intelligent boy.
☆ Paris is the capital of France.
☆ Sachin is a cricket player.
In the above examples, "John" and "Sachin" are a particular person , "Paris" is a particular place.

Common Noun :

The name shared in common by everyone of the same class or group.
for example:
☆ Birds fly in the air.
☆ I have written many books.
☆ Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader.
In the above examples, "Birds", "books" and "leader" are used to represent some group or class.
Common Noun can be further divided into two groups:

• Countable Common Noun:
  The common noun which can be counted. In above examples, birds, books can be counted.
• Mass Common Noun:
  The common noun which can not be counted , some units of measurement are required.
  for example : Water is necessary for living beings , here water can be in gallon, litre .

Collective Noun :

The name given to a number of things regarded as a whole, group or collection.
for example:
☆ Indian army fought bravely.
☆ A bunch of keys is lying on the table
☆ Our team won the match
In the above examples, "army","bunch" and "team " represent a group of person, things.

Material Noun :

The word used for the substance of which things are made.
for example:
☆ My ring is made of gold.
☆ Steel is very strong.
☆ This bed is made up of wood.
In the above examples, "gold", "steel" and "wood " represent substance which are used to make others substances.

Abstract Noun :

The word used for an action, state or quality.
for example:
☆ Honesty is the best policy
☆ Our army fought bravely
☆ His childhood was full of misery.
In the above examples, "Honesty", "braverly" represent the quality and "childhood " represent state.
